Drought’s toll: Austrian Minister pressures EU for action amid severe agricultural crisis

In response to massive crop losses caused by recent drought, Federal Minister of Agriculture Alois Rainer (CSU) is prepared to hold the EU accountable. Rainer told the “Rheinische Post” that he had already addressed the dramatic situation in the federal cabinet last week, emphasizing the need for preparation across all government sectors. He stated, “I am knocking on every door where help is possible.” Furthermore, he has outlined the worrying situation on fields and pastures to the EU Agriculture Commissioner, making it clear that European assistance must be sought in a true emergency.

The drought is severely impacting harvests and causing fodder reserves to dwindle, raising pressure on agricultural businesses with every dry day. Rainer assured the farming community, “Our farms can be certain: I am campaigning at all levels for support for our agriculture.” He plans to present reliable official harvest data later this August. Separately, the German Farmers’ Association intends to submit its crop balance this Tuesday, and it is already clear that losses this year are extensive.
