Gröhe Takes Helm of German Red Cross

Former Federal Minister of Health Hermann Gröhe (CDU) will seek the presidency of the German Red Cross (DRK). The DRK announced on Wednesday that Gröhe will stand for election at the upcoming federal assembly in Berlin on November 29th. This follows the decision of outgoing President Gerda Hasselfeldt not to run for a third term.

“I consider the DRK’s request for me to be a candidate for President a great honor” Gröhe stated. “I gladly and wholeheartedly accepted”. He added that the work of the German Red Cross exemplifies people’s commitment to helping those in need and he is eager to support this important work.

Gröhe served in the German Bundestag from 1994 to 2025 and held the position of Federal Minister of Health from 2013 to 2018. Prior to that, he was the CDU’s General Secretary from 2009 to 2013. At the federal assembly, he will compete for the support of 130 delegates representing the DRK’s member organizations for an initial term of four years. If elected, Gröhe would succeed Gerda Hasselfeldt, a former politician from the CSU.
