The prevailing mood among German businesses has recently improved. The Ifo Business Climate Index rose to 88.8 points in August, up from 86.7 in July, according to the Ifo Institute. This increase surpassed what observers had anticipated. Companies generally expressed greater satisfaction with their current operational status, and uncertainty continued to decrease, leading them to significantly revise their future expectations upward. Even with a renewed rise in energy costs, the German economy is showing signs of recovery, the Institute notes.
A noticeable increase in the index was recorded in the manufacturing sector. Industry leaders reported a markedly better assessment of their ongoing business, coupled with less skepticism regarding the future. Production is expected to grow over the next three months, although companies remain unsatisfied with the current state of order intake.
In the service sector, the business climate also strengthened, and expectations brightened. The current business situation was assessed more positively. While IT service providers sounded confident, the situation in transport and logistics remains challenging.
Retailers also saw their indicator rise. Traders were more content with their current operations, and their positive outlook continued its upward trend, with the sentiment in the wholesale sector seeing a particularly sharp jump.
In the construction industry, the boost in the index was attributed to expectations becoming noticeably less pessimistic. However, the assessments of the current situation were adjusted slightly downward.
