The Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama has passed away. She died on August 14th in a hospital in Tokyo, the nation’s capital, a fact recently announced by the Yayoi Kusama Museum and the Yayoi Kusama Foundation.
Kusama was one of the most significant Japanese artists of the post-war era. Between 1958 and 1972, she resided primarily in New York City, where many of her most famous works, performances, and happenings were created. A characteristic feature of her art is the use of “Polka Dots”-colorful dots that she applied to canvases, sculptures, and even to people.
She was also a key figure in Soft Sculpture, which involves three-dimensional artworks made from soft and flexible materials such as fabric, fur, foam, plastic, paper, or various fibers, contrasting with traditional sculptures made from firm, rigid substances. Furthermore, Kusama opened her own museum in Tokyo on September 27, 2017.
