Bahn-Chaos Neu Verzögerungen drohen

Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) anticipates further delays in the comprehensive overhaul of the German rail network.

When questioned about the possibility of the modernization of 40 key routes extending beyond 2035, the CDU politician told Funke Mediengruppe newspapers that a definitive completion date remains uncertain. “Currently, we do not have a firm timeframe for the completion of the comprehensive renovation. We initially anticipated completion by the end of 2031. However, it is possible that the renovation will take longer, but this would not be a major setback”. The railway company recently proposed extending the corridor renovation until 2035 during an industry information event.

Schnieder stated he has requested Deutsche Bahn to initiate a sector dialogue with the construction industry. The aim is to determine whether to adhere to the original plan of undertaking nine renovations simultaneously on high-performance corridors or to stagger the measures, postponing some of the work.

In the first half of 2025, only 64 percent of long-distance trains arrived on time. Minister Schnieder does not foresee a swift improvement in punctuality, acknowledging that the ongoing renovations inevitably lead to construction sites and further disruptions to the network. “This will not result in trains being punctual in the short term. However, with each investment, the network will become better and more reliable.

Regarding a target of 80 percent on-time performance within five years, Schnieder responded that this is not a realistic short-term goal. “It would be irresponsible to provide such a figure. I can only say that the current situation is completely unsatisfactory. Our aim is to significantly improve the situation.

Schnieder also countered comments by Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz, who suggested customers should understand the delays. “I don’t think that quite reflects reality” Schnieder commented. “Our objective must be for the railway to become more punctual and for delays to be communicated promptly and transparently. This will also foster greater understanding among customers”.
