A potential compromise on how the government plans to address rising fuel prices is emerging within the red-black coalition. Previously, the economic minister, Katherina Reiche (CDU), advocated for providing direct payments to lower-income individuals, while the finance minister, Lars Klingbeil (SPD), pushed for an EU framework to implement a windfall tax. However, Armand Zorn, an SPD vice-faction member and member of the coalition’s internal fuel price taskforce, is now expressing openness to targeted relief measures. Zorn told the “Spiegel” that a windfall tax could provide flexibility, whether viewed through a European or national lens. Additionally, the SPD is proposing that the state could establish maximum prices for gasoline and diesel, akin to what is done in Belgium or Luxembourg, with these ceilings being regularly adjusted based on cost situations. Zorn argued that evidence shows the market is not functioning adequately and that corporations are benefiting excessively, making a fuel price cap a sensible regulatory measure. This suggestion, however, has currently met with resistance from the coalition’s partner.
