Given the current high fuel costs, driving an electric vehicle is more economically advantageous than ever compared to traditional combustion engine cars. According to a recent analysis by the comparison portal Verivox, published in the Funke Media Group’s newspapers, owner-drivers who charge their mid-to-upper class vehicles at home can expect to spend approximately 70 percent less than a gasoline car and 56 percent less than a diesel car for every 100 kilometers driven.
To calculate this, the study utilized a household electricity price of €0.3229 per kilowatt-hour, factoring in an average consumption of 16.9 kilowatt-hours for the electric vehicle. For 100 kilometers, the electricity cost was calculated at roughly €5.44. In contrast, the same distance recently cost about €17.96 with petrol and €12.39 with diesel. These calculations were based on average consumption rates of 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers for petrol and 5.2 liters per 100 kilometers for diesel.
Fuel prices in Germany have risen significantly, exacerbated by renewed escalation in the Middle East and new uncertainties in key oil transport routes. Over the past seven days, the average price for E10 petrol reached €2.27 per liter, and diesel averaged €2.38 per liter.
Thorsten Storck, an energy expert at Verivox, noted that the gap in operating costs between EVs and internal combustion engine vehicles is currently unusually large, making the shift to electric transport even more appealing. However, Storck emphasized that achieving this full cost benefit is contingent upon having a domestic charging station (a ‘Wallbox’).
Even when charging publicly, the analysis shows that electric charging remains cheaper than filling up at a petrol station, despite higher electricity prices. Based on Verivox’s prices, 100 kilometers using standard public charging totaled around €8.77, while fast charging came to €10.12. Even the fast charging cost was 44 percent cheaper than petrol and 18 percent cheaper than diesel. It is important to note, however, that the consumption figures for public charging stations used in the report date back to March 2025.
The cost advantage is particularly significant for households equipped with their own Wallbox and a photovoltaic system. Individuals who rely exclusively on public charging stations realize a smaller price differential. Storck concluded that EVs are most cost-effective for households that can charge their cars cheaply at home.
