According to Klaus Müller, the President of the Federal Network Agency, the governmental target of 80 percent capacity in Germany’s gas storage facilities may not be reachable before winter. Müller informed Phoenix that, according to all experts, hitting 80 percent is now technically almost impossible and unrealistic. Currently, the gas storage facilities are filled to 56 percent, which is already more than was drawn during the entire last winter. However, he stressed that since it is mid-September, the reservoirs can and should still be filled further.
Even though prices are high, Müller urged dealers to utilize September and October “to store and prepare a certain amount more.” Nevertheless, the gas storage facilities are not the sole element of gas supply. Müller pointed out that “We have created our own capabilities with four liquefied natural gas terminals. We can source gas from Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France.”
Furthermore, he welcomed the establishment of a state-run gas reserve and stated that it would be beneficial if the law were quickly discussed and adopted.
