Weber Hails Canadian Alliance as “Giant Opportunity” for Europe to Boost Trade

Following the address given by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, the chairman of the EPP Group, praised the new alliance with Canada, viewing it as a “massive opportunity” for Europe. Speaking to the newspapers of the Mediengruppe Bayern, Weber asserted that Europe grows stronger globally by establishing robust and close partnerships. He noted that Canada’s associated membership provides a significant boost for Europeans and sends a clear message to the world: Europe is not standing alone and is actively forging new alliances. He added that the focus now must be on bringing this deepened cooperation to life. Furthermore, Weber called for stronger economic ties. He demanded that economic relationships with Canada be massively expanded, arguing for an “upgrade” to the existing trade agreement-specifically, a “Ceta Plus.”
