CDU General Secretary Franziska Hoppermann expressed optimism regarding the party’s chances in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, insisting that they will not fall below the crucial five-percent threshold. Even though the local CDU currently stands at only 6 percent according to the ZDF political barometer, Hoppermann stated that she does not fear dropping below what could be a critical electoral threshold for federal chairman and CDU leader Friedrich Merz. Speaking to the news broadcaster “Welt” on Friday, Hoppermann declared, “To be honest, I do not have that worry. I have been campaigning in Mecklenburg for several days this week, and many others have as well. Thorsten Frei was also there campaigning yesterday. They have many people from other state associations who are now traveling daily by bus to conduct door-to-door campaigns. We know that every vote counts, and we are fighting until the end, highly motivated and very optimistic.” Despite the poor figures, the CDU still views Hoppermann as a broad, people’s party within the Union. While acknowledging an overall political polarization, Hoppermann noted that the recent municipal election results in Lower Saxony have “once again impressively shown how rooted the CDU is, even in the federal states, at the local level.”
