The provisional official final results of the state election in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern were published late Sunday night into Monday morning.
According to the data, the AfD emerged as the strongest political force with 38.2 percent of the vote. Following behind is the SPD, securing 35.5 percent. The CDU recorded its poorest result in a state election in history, failing to meet the 5-percent threshold with only 4.9 percent of the vote.
The FDP, which had previously been represented in the Schwerin State Parliament, has fallen into the extra-parliamentary opposition, registering just 1.0 percent. Notably, the Liberals are ranked behind the animal welfare party, which achieved 1.1 percent.
Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) now faces the challenge of forming a majority in the Schwerin parliament solely through cooperation with the Left Party (Linke) and the Greens. The Left Party obtained 6.5 percent, while the Greens secured 5.7 percent.
At its debut election in the northeast, the BSW missed the 5-percent hurdle, receiving 4.8 percent. Among the smaller parties, the “Handwerker Partei Deutschland” stood out with 0.5 percent, while the Freie Wähler obtained 0.4 percent. The satire party “Die Partei” and “Team Freiheit” both garnered 0.3 percent. All other parties were even smaller, with Pirates and Volt both receiving 0.2 percent, and ÖDP, Bündnis C, KPD, PdF, and WLD each securing 0.1 percent.
