The SPD leadership has decided to host a convention in December, following agreements reached by the presidency and the party board, according to reports from “Der Spiegel” and ARD. This convention is intended as a direct response to the party’s recent electoral performance, serving as a large-scale forum to debate the party’s ideological future. Specific topics slated for discussion include the affordability of living costs.
During a meeting on Monday, some party board members, including Juso leader Philipp Türmer and Bundestag member Annika Klose, initially sought a special party meeting, but they were unable to achieve a majority. The party leadership ultimately settled on the convention instead.
The crucial difference between the two formats is that a special party meeting allows for votes on staff and leadership, such as the current SPD chairpersons Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas. In contrast, a convention is strictly for ideological debate. The party leadership has stated that the December event will not deal with personnel issues, but rather focus on how the SPD intends to position itself both within the current coalition and beyond.
