Raed Saleh, the chairman of the Social Democrats’ (SPD) faction in the Berlin House of Representatives, will not seek re-election. According to matching media reports, he plans to announce this decision this Tuesday at the first faction meeting following the election.
Saleh has led the faction for 15 years. However, the weak performance of the Berlin SPD in Sunday’s election has amplified growing calls within the party for personnel changes and consequences. The Berlin SPD secured its poorest result in the history of a House of Representatives election, achieving only 12.1 percent.
The results showed the Left party as the winner with 25.7 percent, followed by the CDU at 18.8 percent, the AfD at 16.3 percent, and the Greens at 14.3 percent.
