The US stock exchanges experienced mixed results on Tuesday. The Dow closed in New York at 51,863 points, recording a decline of 0.4% compared to the previous trading day. Meanwhile, the broader S&P 500 was showing weak negative movement at around 7,765 points. In contrast, the technology-focused Nasdaq 100 finished the period at approximately 30,730 points, up 0.8%.
Despite Wall Street starting the day with optimistic sentiment, comments made by US President Donald Trump dampened market spirits. Speaking at the UN General Debate on Tuesday, Trump stated that he expected to only reach an agreement with Iran after the congressional elections on November 3rd. This statement came after remarks released by Tehran, which had previously fostered hope by suggesting the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened within seven days if the US lessened its military pressure and lifted its blockade on Iranian ports.
In international markets, the European common currency weakened slightly on Tuesday evening. One Euro was priced at $1.1449 USD, meaning one Dollar could be acquired for 0.8734 Euros.
Gold prices were able to profit, achieving a price of $4,367 USD per fine ounce in the evening, marking an increase of 0.6%. This translated to a cost of €122.62 per gram. Conversely, the oil price saw a sharp drop. Around 10 PM Central European Time on Tuesday, a barrel of North Sea grade Brent cost $98.24 USD, which was 2.1% lower than the previous day’s closing price.
