The SPD district in Frankfurt is demanding the replacement of party chairpersons Bärbel Bas and Lars Klingbeil. According to a policy paper cited by the “Tagesspiegel,” the local SPD affiliate in Frankfurt am Main is calling for an extraordinary federal party conference to be convened in the autumn of 2026 to initiate a complete overhaul of the party’s leadership.
The district insists that the role of party chairman must be determined through an “open application process,” with the final decision being made via a binding, nationwide membership vote. The members of this major district argue that the current leadership is responsible for the “strategic and political development of recent years,” and that a political fresh start is only possible through a comprehensive change in personnel. The Frankfurt SPD is therefore demanding a “renewal of the party leadership and the election of the party chairman through an open and transparent procedure.”
Furthermore, the resolution strongly criticizes the tendency for “small leadership groups” to decide which figure is presented to the party as the “solution without alternatives.” The district asserts that a vibrant social democratic party requires “an open discussion about people, ideas, and the future political course.”
The Frankfurt SPD leadership has also issued a serious warning to the current party leadership, stating that if core social democratic principles cannot be permanently upheld or are violated, the party might consider foregoing participation in government.
Beyond internal leadership changes, the Frankfurt group has raised demands for major systemic shifts. These include a renewed constitutional reform of the federal debt brake and a review of corresponding regulations at all state levels. There is also a rising call for increased taxes. Crucially, the Frankfurt SPD urges its entire party to stop adopting “conservative and right-wing narratives” regarding asylum and migration policy, advocating instead for viewing migration as a societal and economic opportunity. Finally, the district calls for a “consistent commitment to the examination and initiation of an AfD ban procedure.”
