Following the invitation extended by Russian President Vladimir Putin-and relayed by US President Donald Trump-to the G20 summit in December, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) reiterated the government’s position. Speaking to the media outlet Funke, government spokesman Stefan Kornelius stated that, due to the war in Ukraine, there is no concept of “normalcy” in dealing with Russia for the German government. Kornelius noted, “We acknowledge that the US has invited President Putin to the G20 summit. We also acknowledge that President Putin has not yet decided on the invitation.” Preparations for the summit, including discussions around this specific matter, are currently underway, and Germany is coordinating with its international partners.
