Hessian Minister-President Boris Rhein of the CDU has sharply increased his criticism of the federal government’s intention to raise taxes on alcohol, sparkling wine, tobacco, and sugary drinks. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Rhein warned that “Whoever raises prices in times like these will pay a high price,” noting that rising living expenses pose one of the most significant daily worries for citizens.
CDU state premiers are scheduled to meet with the federal chancellor on Thursday in various discussions, with the current situation of the Union party following the state elections expected to be a key topic.
Over recent days, Rhein has already signaled his views on the necessary course of action. The CDU politician made it clear that he rejects tax increases targeting citizens, arguing that “More money taken from citizens leads to less trust in politics. This is the wrong way.” He stressed that democratic politics must once again focus on the living reality and everyday concerns of ordinary people.
Meanwhile, the Federal Council will hold its first discussion on Friday regarding the planned increase in the tobacco tax and the amendments to the taxes on alcohol and sparkling wine.
