DAX Gains Despite Interest Rate Fears as Inflation and Slow Growth Threaten Stagflation

The DAX rose to close out the week of trading. The index was recorded at 25,409 points at the close of Xetra trading, marking a gain of 0.6 percent compared to the previous day’s close.

In terms of performance, Commerzbank shares led the gains, increasing by over two percent shortly before the market closed, followed by Adidas and Deutsche Bank. Conversely, BASF saw the sharpest decline, losing over three percent, with Scout 24 and Rheinmetall also trading significantly lower.

Market analysts point to ongoing systemic concerns. Andreas Lipkow, Chief Market Analyst at CMC Markets, noted that fears of continued rising interest rates and bond yields are pervasive, hindering a sustainable recovery in the stock market. He further stated that the high level of energy prices is increasingly acting as a damper on both the economy and the exchanges.

This combination of factors is causing apprehension among investors. Lipkow explained that high energy costs sustain inflationary pressure, while climbing yields tighten financing conditions. Furthermore, consumer spending remains weak, despite some initial positive signals in early indicators. This sets the risk of stagflation over the markets. For equities, the combination of entrenched inflation and weak growth is particularly difficult because it limits the central banks’ scope for supportive monetary policy.

This uncertainty is currently leading to a consolidation phase in the stock markets. However, the upcoming earnings season could provide new momentum. Analysts suggest that companies will need to demonstrate how effectively they are managing high financing costs, elevated energy prices, and restrained consumer activity.

In separate currency news, the European common currency strengthened slightly on Friday afternoon. The Euro traded at 1.1397 US dollars, meaning the dollar was available for 0.8774 Euros.
