Following the state election results, the SPD (Social Democrats) is advancing the succession process for the office of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. According to SPD parliamentary affairs director Dirk Wiese, the state elections are concluded, and it is now time to accelerate the search for a female candidate for the presidency. Wiese emphasized that she must be a woman. The SPD politician added that she would need to act prudently and possess strong judgment to address and resolve conflicts early on, along with having a good reputation on the international stage. He stated he does not know why only men currently meet these criteria, asserting that “the time is right for a female Federal President.”
Mechthild Heil of the CDU (Christian Democrats), who chairs the women’s group within the Union parliamentary faction, also advocated for a woman to hold the highest office. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, she expressed confidence that after 77 years, a woman should finally be elected as Federal President, adding that the state elections made it clear where the majority opinion lies regarding a candidate.
Despite their losses in state elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Berlin, the Union and the SPD retain a clear majority in the Federal Assembly. Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had previously announced that discussions would take place following the elections. Ilse Aigner, the president of the Bavarian state parliament (CSU), is being considered as a potential candidate.
