Federal Economic Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) has reaffirmed her unwavering support for the federal government’s reform agenda, emphasizing the need for members to be prepared to fight for these changes. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), Reiche stated that the government has a clear mandate for reform, which it must fulfill. The CDU politician further added that in order to make progress, the coalition must “stay on the field and fight,” using a football metaphor.
She is convinced that all participants in the coalition remain acutely aware of the seriousness of the situation. According to the Economic Minister, reforms are not an end in themselves; rather, they define the nation’s direction: “back to the forefront of Europe through growth and competitiveness, and towards greater pride in our country’s achievements.”
Reiche likened the process of reform to a fitness program. She explained, “The first steps are exhausting after a long winter, but then the climb is continuous.” She acknowledged that many people initially fear that reforms will lead to job losses or falling incomes, or that their children will fare worse off than they do. For these reasons, Reiche stressed that reforms must fulfill the crucial promise made to future generations.
The CDU politician noted that the SPD does not dispute the necessity of these changes. “Everyone knows that the social security systems are strained to the breaking point, rising labor costs reduce competitiveness, bureaucracy is burdensome, and high energy prices are a significant problem for our industry,” she concluded.
Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) backed the minister, stating that the Chancellor is making enormous efforts for the country on a daily basis. Reiche told the “Rheinische Post” that it is vital that the Chancellor demonstrates leadership strength and takes responsibility in Europe and globally by driving change decisively.
