The SPD women are pushing strongly for a woman to succeed Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier ahead of upcoming coalition talks. Carmen Wegge, the chairwoman of the SPD Women’s Association, told the Rheinische Post that, in her view, “it is long overdue for a woman to take on this highest office.” She noted that Germany has many strong, engaged, and qualified women who would be suitable candidates for the role. Wegge emphasized that her group wishes a woman to become the next Federal President.
Dirk Wiese, the SPD’s parliamentary manager, also voiced his support for a female candidate. Speaking to the Rheinische Post, he stated: “The state elections are over, and now it is time to reach the finish line in the search for a candidate for the office of Federal President.” He reaffirmed the desire for the next president to be a woman. The coalition intends to decide on the successor to Steinmeier this autumn.
