CDU Secretary-General Franziska Hoppermann anticipates that a decision regarding the successor to Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be made soon. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” she noted that discussions were planned for after the autumn state elections, and that this time is fast approaching.
While Hoppermann personally would prefer a woman to take on the role, she stressed that gender is not the primary deciding factor for the nation’s highest office, stating that prioritizing it would be inappropriate. Looking at potential candidates, she mentioned Ilse Aigner, the president of the Bavarian State Parliament (CSU), and confirmed that the CDU has several outstanding women who could be candidates.
In contrast, SPD Parliamentary Director Dirk Wiese is urging for a swift resolution. Addressing the “Rheinische Post,” he stated that with state elections now behind them, it is time to bring the search for a female Federal President candidate to a rapid conclusion.
