Following the decision to select Munich as the German host city, some believe that the prospect of hosting the Olympic Games could generate a significant boost across the entire nation. Anja Karliczek, chairwoman of the Tourism Committee of the Bundestag, stated to the “Rheinische Post” that from tourism policy perspectives, the Olympics would not only usher in a new boom for Munich and the surrounding region but for Germany as a whole. She noted that since the Paris Games, it has become clear what kind of impact and sustainable effects large-scale events have on the entire tourism industry, ranging from hotel bookings and gastronomy to building Germany’s global image as a tourist destination. Karliczek added that the current challenge is to capitalize on the enthusiasm for the bids for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, which she observed was visible across all three applications.
Meanwhile, CDU politician Friedrich Merz offered his hearty congratulations to Munich and Bavaria. He also specifically thanked the regions of Cologne-Rhine-Ruhr and North Rhine-Westphalia, as well as Hamburg and Berlin, which had withdrawn their bids. Merz expressed gratitude for their submissions and efforts, allowing the opportunity for Olympic and Paralympic Games to return to Germany. He concluded by saying they are eagerly anticipating the event alongside Germany’s Olympic candidate. “We are moving forward with confidence: Germany can host the Olympics. We are now tackling the international bid together,” he stated.
