Heatwave Crisis German Workers Demand Relief

Calls are growing for expanded protections for workers facing extreme heat conditions across various industries in Germany. Anja Piel, a board member of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), has advocated for broader adoption of measures like heat-free days and payments during periods of intense heat.

Referencing a pre-existing agreement for roofers, which provides for time off and compensation when weather conditions prevent work, Piel suggested this model could serve as a blueprint for other sectors. “This can be a role model for other industries and must be negotiated at the bargaining table if it makes sense for the sector” she stated in an interview with the “Rheinische Post”.

Piel emphasized the responsibility of employers to safeguard employees from heat stress, highlighting the differences in working environments – ranging from office settings to construction sites, care facilities and industrial plants. She argued that customized protective measures are crucial to address the varying levels of risk associated with each workplace.

The call for action comes as Germany prepares for another heatwave expected next week. Piel underscored the urgency given increasing frequency and intensity of heat periods attributed to climate change. She further urged employers to proactively implement heat protection measures and called for increased staffing within regulatory bodies to ensure consistent monitoring of workplace safety protocols.
