Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD’s top candidate in Saxony-Anhalt, announced on Tuesday that he intends to run for Minister-President in the state parliament this December. He made the statement following a meeting of the AfD faction in Magdeburg.
This commitment marks the first time the AfD politician has set a concrete date for his candidacy, coming just three weeks after his party’s decisive electoral victory. Previously, Siegmund had indicated that he anticipated a new state government in November or December.
In the state election held in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6th, the AfD emerged as the clear strongest force with 43.8 percent of the vote. Based on the final results, the party holds 39 of the 83 seats in the new parliament. A majority requires 42 votes for an absolute majority. Other parties secured 15 mandates for the CDU, while the Linke, SPD, and Greens each won eight seats, and the BSW received five. According to the state constitution, a simple majority of the votes cast is sufficient in the third ballot.
