The financial situation of the state of Berlin is far more severe than previously known. According to reports citing participants from the Senate session, Finance Senator Stefan Evers (CDU) disclosed on Tuesday that the 2028 budget already contains a gap of €4.28 billion.
These figures, which originated from calculations by the Stability Council, indicate further deficits in the coming years. The Council projects that €4.99 billion will be missing from the 2029 budget, and the projected deficit for 2030 is set at €4.89 billion.
The Stability Council has criticized Berlin’s overall financial status, noting that the city exceeds several of the Council’s mandated requirements. Specifically, the state’s debt per inhabitant stands at €17,342-approximately €400 higher than the permissible threshold. Consequently, sources cited by the “Bild-Zeitung” state that a restructuring process must be initiated without delay.
