Volker Wissing, a former FDP politician, is currently being considered for a senior position within the Evangelical Church. According to reports citing internal information, the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) has been discussing the possibility of appointing the former Federal Minister of Transport as the President of the EKD Synod in April 2027.
This potential appointment comes as Anna-Nicole Heinrich, who currently holds the highest lay office in German Protestantism, has confirmed that she will not be standing for re-election. Heinrich informed the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” on Thursday that she viewed her role as a committed involvement intended only for a limited period.
Wissing, a devout Christian and trained church musician, is 56 years old and is a lawyer. He exited the FDP in early November 2024 following the collapse of the former traffic light coalition. His initial selection process is expected to take place in November, where he would be elected as an EKD Synod member by his regional church in his native region of Palatinate. His subsequent election as the EKD President could then take place in April 2027.
