The fuel discount, which the federal government introduced last Thursday in response to high gasoline and diesel prices and which is set to last for three months, has met with a divided reaction among Germans, according to a poll conducted by Infratest for the “ARD Deutschlandtrend.”
The survey showed that 47 percent believe the fuel discount is a correct measure, while 46 percent think it is incorrect. Only supporters of the AfD generally view the measure positively, with 60 percent approving of it. Conversely, a majority of Green party supporters are critical of the measure, with 73 percent being against it. Among supporters of the Union (CDU/CSU) and the SPD, opinions were completely split.
Looking at broader efforts, a clear majority of respondents (74 percent) assess the federal government’s attempts to lower high energy prices in Germany as being not extensive enough. An additional 16 percent consider the government’s actions to be appropriate, while 5 percent feel they are too extensive.
Infratest questioned 1,303 eligible voters aged 18 and over between September 28 and September 30.
