Gröhe Joins North-South Commission to Push for Fair Global Development and Stronger Institutions

Hermann Gröhe, the former Federal Minister of Health and current President of the German Red Cross (CDU), has been appointed as a member of the new North-South Development Policy Commission, which is chaired by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

Commenting on his appointment to the “Rheinische Post”, Gröhe stated that economic cooperation, development, and strengthening international institutions have always held a vital place in his political career. He also highlighted that as part of the Red Cross, they belong to the world’s largest humanitarian movement-the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Gröhe described his invitation to join the new Development Policy Commission as a great honor and expressed strong anticipation for the work ahead. He noted that he shares a history of trusting cooperation with Olaf Scholz, dating back to his time as Health Minister and continuing thereafter. Regarding the commission’s co-chair, Laura Chinchilla, the former President of Costa Rica, Gröhe added that he has already held intensive discussions with her regarding the commission’s mandate.

According to the Red Cross President, new proposals-created collaboratively-for future development cooperation and the strengthening of international institutions are in the best interest of Germany. He concluded by emphasizing that the global challenges they face can only be overcome if global tensions are reduced and fairer development opportunities are strengthened for all.
