Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) received the new British Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, in the Chancellery in Berlin on Thursday, where he was greeted with a military honors ceremony.
Beyond their private discussions, a key item on the agenda was the exchange of ratification documents for the Kensington Treaty. This treaty was initially signed by Merz and Burnham’s predecessor, Starmer, in 2025, and covers numerous agreements relating to security and defense, as well as cooperation in areas like the economy, research, education, digitalization, and the exchange of citizens between the two countries.
Later, Merz and Burnham are scheduled to take part in a “regional growth forum” at the Chancellery. Prior reports indicated that the discussions between Merz and the British Prime Minister are expected to address several bilateral and foreign policy matters, alongside important questions regarding European and economic policy.
