SPD politician Karl Lauterbach is opposed to the idea of his party forming a coalition with the Greens and the Left in Berlin. Speaking on the channel “Spitzengespräch” of “Der Spiegel”, he expressed hope that this red-red-green coalition will not materialize.
Lauterbach cited accusations of antisemitism against the Left, stating that these weighty accusations are personally difficult for him. When asked whether he considered these allegations justified, he affirmed that he does so concerning the Left’s activities in Neukölln.
At the same time, Lauterbach pushed back against equating the Left with the Alternative for Germany (AfD). He argued that a constitutionally hostile party aiming to overcome democracy from within the democratic system is fundamentally different from a party that seeks expropriations. Therefore, he stated, the two parties should not be described as having a shared philosophical foundation.
