CDU Demands Clarity from Left Party Over Berlin Parliament President Candidate Selection

Following the announcement by the Left, Green, and SPD parties of their intention to initiate exploratory talks regarding a government formation in Berlin, the Union is swiftly demanding that the Left Party disclose its personnel plans. Günter Krings (CDU), deputy chairman of the Union parliamentary group, told the “Rheinische Post” on Friday that clarity needs to be established quickly concerning the election of the President of the Berlin House of Representatives. He noted that, especially after the controversy surrounding the election of the AfD politician Tobias Rausch as the State Parliament President in Saxony-Anhalt, the public has a right to know which candidates the Left Party-described as a rather extreme faction-wishes to propose for the office. Krings further emphasized that other parties are questioning whether they should readily hand over this position to the left-wing extremist Left Party. He concluded by stressing that there should be no automatic precedent allowing an arbitrary member of the Left Party faction to be elected president.
