Kretschmann Rejects Coalition with Berlin Left Party, Citing Antisemitism and Unrealistic Housing Policies

Former Baden-Württemberg Minister President Winfried Kretschmann has issued a strong warning to the Berlin Green Party regarding a potential coalition with the Left Party. Speaking to “Spiegel,” the Green politician stated that cooperation is impossible with a party that openly displays antisemitic tendencies. “That is completely ruled out, unless they can credibly correct that,” Kretschmann added. He described the antisemitism within parts of Die Linke as “revealing,” arguing that such “moral posturing and illusionary promises of justice among the German Left are built on a very shaky foundation.”

In addition to his concerns about antisemitism, Kretschmann sharply criticized the Berlin Left’s plan to expropriate housing companies. When questioned about the approach, he asked how practically this idea could be executed. In his view, people would quickly realize that the plan is impractical and makes no sense. While the German constitution allows for expropriation, it mandates compensation. Kretschmann expressed doubt about how this could be afforded during a time of mounting debt. Furthermore, he noted that the expectation of dramatically lowering rental prices would require even less money. “The idea embarrasses itself when confronted with reality,” the Green politician concluded.
