The recent scandal within the military medical regiment (Sanitätsregiment 1) stationed at the Sachsen-Anhalt garrison in Weißenfels is expanding. According to statements made by Generaloberstarzt Ralf Hoffmann, the commander of the Central Medical Service of the German Armed Forces, during a meeting of the Bundestag Defense Committee on Wednesday, the allegations involve the handling of narcotics-specifically amphetamines and testosterone-as well as threats and sexual misconduct.
Internal investigations have accounted for 45 recorded interrogations, resulting in the identification of 10 suspects. Seven of these individuals have consequently been temporarily prevented from performing their duties. Separately, the public prosecutor’s office is currently investigating five of the suspects.
In response to the developments, Kerstin Vieregge, a Member of the Bundestag from the CDU and a defense expert, stated following the committee meeting that she welcomed the swift and thorough clarification of the situation. She remarked that every such case is unacceptable, adding that “camaraderie ends here.”
