Defence politician Sara Nanni (Greens) is calling for the establishment of an independent external reporting agency following allegations of drug abuse and sexual assault within a Bundeswehr barracks in Weißenfels. Speaking to RTL and ntv on Wednesday, she stressed the need to create an environment within the armed forces where perpetrators do not feel secure.
Nanni pointed out that there are indications that offenders have relied on the protection of their superiors, adding that no perpetrator should assume they are shielded by a leader who might, themselves, have dubious ethics or conduct.
The Greens politician described the allegations as extremely serious, stating that it is essential to “understand the dynamics in which perpetrators seem able to feel so comfortable, as apparently happened here.” Nanni criticized the Ministry of Defence for yet to provide a complete catalogue of planned measures, saying she feels the ministry is taking “a little too much time.”
She anticipates that the increased public scrutiny will encourage other affected individuals to come forward. Furthermore, she urged Defence Minister Boris Pistorius to personally encourage the reporting of incidents, insisting that these cases must be thoroughly investigated.
Nanni clarified that the true extent of sexual misconduct in the Bundeswehr remains undetermined at this point. The results of a “dark field study” requested by parliament-which investigates the experiences of women in the military-are still awaited. Despite this uncertainty, the defence politician noted that the military ombudsman is receiving corresponding reports almost every day.
