The German Police Union (GdP) has called for close coordination with Poland regarding the return of individuals at the border with Germany, following Poland’s commencement of border controls. Andreas Roßkopf, federal chairman of the GdP for the Federal Police, emphasized the necessity of establishing clear guidelines on when and under what circumstances returns can be implemented, stressing that these should be mutually agreed upon to ensure a workable process.
Roßkopf, in comments to the “Rheinische Post”, highlighted concerns regarding potential reciprocal rejections. He warned that Polish authorities may refuse to accept returned individuals or, conversely, send them back to Germany, creating a “ping-pong” effect. Such a scenario, he stated, would render vulnerable individuals as “pawns” in political maneuvering.
The union leader also cautioned that a system of reciprocal rejections would significantly increase the workload for the Federal Police, requiring additional resources and personnel to manage the resulting complexities. The GdP underscored the need for practical and functional agreements between the two countries to avoid creating a situation detrimental to both the authorities and those seeking asylum or protection.
