Leipzig/Halle Airport Runway Reopened After Security Breach Investigation

The northern runway at Leipzig/Halle Airport has been reopened for flight operations following a security incident that occurred on Sunday afternoon. The Federal Police Inspectorate in Leipzig announced this. The initial issue was a breach in the security fence at the airport, which had led to restrictions on flight operations. According to police, the northern runway was closed while flights continued to operate from the southern runway.

The damage to the airport’s perimeter fence was detected late Saturday evening around 11:00 PM. Because there was initially a possibility that unauthorized individuals or suspicious objects had gained access to the site, federal police forces, working with the Leipzig Police Directorate, secured the affected area. Initial searches were conducted during the night in particularly vulnerable sections, but neither unauthorized persons nor suspicious items were found.

As daylight broke, intensive searches began at 8:30 AM, involving police forces, a police helicopter, and Federal Police drone technology. Current findings suggest that the fence was likely breached by a vehicle. The Leipzig Police Directorate has taken over the investigation and is investigating the matter “in all directions.”
