Röttgen: Military Victory Against Iran Is Unrealistic, Suggests Political Stalemate

CDU foreign policy expert Norbert Röttgen believes that the war against Iran does not offer any possibility of a military victory for the United States or President Donald Trump. Speaking on Monday in the ntv program “Pinar Atalay,” Röttgen stated his view that even massive military escalation would not yield a military solution or achieve victory. According to him, while Trump might “destroy a lot, and even more,” this would not translate into a win. He further argued that additional escalation would be irrational and would place the U.S. in a difficult position.

Because of this, the CDU politician currently views the military actions more as a threat gesture designed to push Iran toward a political resolution. However, Röttgen suggested that the most probable scenario is “the continuation of this state of war for a longer period.”

Regarding the conflict, he finds that Germany and Europe are helplessly bound by it. Stating that they have “pretty little influence” in the region, Röttgen added that Europe lacks “tools of power to play a role.” The CDU politician concluded that the continent is in a reactive position and has only “very modest possibilities” in this situation.
