Trump’s Course Unchanged: Midterm Shifts Alter US Dynamics, Not Global Policy

According to Peter Beyer, an external policy expert for the CDU, the Democratic landslide victory during the US Midterms does not signal a shift in the direction of US President Donald Trump. Beyer told the “Rheinische Post” that for Germany and Europe, this means there is no change in the Washington policy course, only a transformation in the overall political dynamic.

He noted that, on a foreign policy level, Trump’s scope of action will initially remain limited. The former transatlantic coordinator stated that the ultimate deciding factor in the elections was economic. He pointed out that high living costs constitute a political weakness for Trump, and his central promise to make American life more affordable has “failed.”

For the Republican party, the result serves as a wake-up call. Beyer commented that the MAGA movement alone cannot capture majorities. Meanwhile, the Democrats must now prove that they are capable of offering something more than simply opposing Trump.
