The Czech Republic’s President Petr Pavel has cautioned against the permanence of border controls, referencing the measures recently implemented by Germany. Addressing concerns in an interview with “Welt” Pavel emphasized that the free movement of people and goods represents “one of Europe’s greatest achievements.
He warned that unilateral departures from the Schengen system could negatively impact the entire European Union. Pavel stressed that any enhanced border security measures between Schengen member states should be temporary, designed to address specific crisis situations.
Germany has intensified border checks, including those with the Czech Republic, since the formation of the new German government led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) in May. In light of this, President Pavel advocated for improved coordination among EU nations and a more robust approach to migration policy.
He highlighted the need to strengthen the EU’s external borders and facilitate better information sharing between border authorities. Pavel also voiced support for stricter policies regarding irregular migration, suggesting a firmer stance towards individuals who fail to adhere to the regulations of their host countries.
