Mario Voigt, the Minister-President of Thuringia and a member of the CDU, has given positive feedback regarding a potential candidacy for Ilse Aigner (CSU) for the office of Federal President. Voigt stated to the newspaper Stern that he finds her suitable.
Drawing from his experience and more than twenty years of professional cooperation, Voigt believes that Aigner possesses the qualities that Germany currently requires. He asserted that she has what it takes to be Federal President.
According to the government leader, Aigner is a woman who can unite the country, is down-to-earth, yet has achieved success through her own hard work. Voigt suggested, “I believe that is a narrative the country could really benefit from.”
Voigt explained that the succession of Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be decided collectively by the Union party.
Voigt had met with Aigner in Erfurt on Wednesday. During a visit to Thuringia, Aigner commented to Stern that she believed the extensive policy discussions regarding the Federal Presidency should not be prolonged indefinitely. She indicated that it simply needs to be decided at some point.
The CDU presidium, of which Voigt is a member, is scheduled to discuss the candidate issue on Sunday and Monday.
