CDU Backs Julia Klöckner for Presidency as Steinmeier’s Successor

Christina Stumpp, the CDU Member of Parliament representing Baden-Württemberg, has suggested Julia Klöckner as a potential successor to Frank-Walter Steinmeier in the office of President of the Federal Republic of Germany. Speaking to Spiegel, Stumpp argued that the nation currently requires a president who will both defend democracy and hold society together. As a former Deputy Secretary-General of the CDU, she believes that both Julia Klöckner and Ilse Aigner possess the qualities needed: groundedness, closeness to the people, and a clear public stance.

Another source within the Unions parliamentary group confirmed the sense of change, stating to Spiegel that the Steinmeier model has failed and that the top state office requires a clearly defined political profile. This individual specifically expressed strong support for Julia Klöckner.

A different member of the Unions parliamentary leadership echoed this positive sentiment, arguing that Julia Klöckner would be an excellent choice because, in their view, she has successfully built a reputation for impartiality during her time as Speaker of the Parliament.

CDU Chairman Friedrich Merz is scheduled to make a decision regarding the succession to Frank-Walter Steinmeier over the weekend and into Monday. In addition to Julia Klöckner and Ilse Aigner, the CDU faction chairwoman from Hesse, Ines Claus, has also been named as a prospective candidate.
