Following a violent attack in Kraków, Poland, on Saturday afternoon, a 24-year-old male suspect shot four women and two men, leaving at least 15 other people injured. Poland’s Interior Minister, Marcin Kierwinski, stated during a press conference that there may be a right-wing extremist motive behind the attack, though he stressed that this theory still requires thorough verification.
According to authorities, the perpetrator began shooting at people indiscriminately from the car he drove to the market around 3 PM. The suspect, who is a 24-year-old Polish citizen, was shot by police and is currently being transferred to a hospital. Police also recovered additional weapons from the suspect’s vehicle.
Authorities currently believe the attack was carried out by a lone individual, and they maintain that there is no longer a threat to the public. Emergency forces remain on the scene, and sections of the market square and adjacent streets have been cordoned off. Residents have been urged to avoid the area.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed his deepest condolences to the victims’ families and relatives. He called on politicians across the spectrum to handle the tragedy with sensitivity and to avoid sensationalism. Tusk also commended the police, writing on X that they are thoroughly investigating “the background and all circumstances of the attack.” He praised the swift reaction of the police officers, noting that they displayed courage and extraordinary dedication, while adding, “Three were injured, one is fighting for his life. They need our prayers, our solidarity, and our full support.”
