The German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) has welcomed the extension of the deadline for trade agreement negotiations between the United States and the European Union, while simultaneously cautioning against excessive optimism. Helena Melnikov, Deputy Director General of the DIHK, stated in an interview with the “Rheinische Post” that the prolongation of tariff suspensions within transatlantic trade represents a positive signal.
Melnikov emphasized the importance of Brussels and Washington leveraging this additional time to reach a sustainable resolution. “Only a robust agreement can prevent renewed escalation and provide planning certainty for all industries” she stated. Maintaining a transatlantic trade deal remains a key objective for German foreign trade, as over 1.2 million jobs in Germany are dependent on exports to the United States, its most significant trading partner outside of Europe.
While a short-term agreement could provide temporary relief for businesses, the ultimate goal must be a comprehensive and long-term framework establishing a reliable foundation for trade and investment. For this to achieve success, the EU needs to present a unified approach, acting cohesively and decisively. A positive aspect of the current situation is the continued emphasis on dialogue rather than confrontation between the two parties; US President Donald Trump recently extended the negotiation period until August 1st.
