New Economics Chief Signals Shift for Germany

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is undergoing a significant restructuring of its leadership, according to reports in the Handelsblatt. Ministerin Katherina Reiche (CDU) is finalizing appointments within her department, notably filling the key role of head of the economic policy division, an informal title also used as “Chief Economist.

Benjamin Weigert will assume the position of Chief Economist, succeeding Elga Bartsch. Mr. Weigert, currently Head of the Central Division for Financial Stability at the Deutsche Bundesbank, brings a wealth of experience, previously serving as Secretary General of the Council of Economic Experts. Formal procedures are now being finalized to facilitate his transition to Berlin, expected to take effect in September.

Ministerin Reiche has indicated ambitions to strengthen the role of the economic policy division, suggesting its potential extends beyond its recent performance. She has voiced expectations for the department to proactively contribute to economic policy formulation within the federal government.

Alongside the Chief Economist appointment, the role of spokesperson for Ministerin Reiche is also nearing resolution. Following an extended search for an external candidate, the current expectation is for an internal appointment to fill the position.
