Inside Politics: Could a New COVID Inquiry Shake Up German Politics?

A member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) is calling for a parliamentary inquiry committee to examine the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Saskia Ludwig, a parliamentarian representing the state of Brandenburg, has become the first CDU representative to publicly advocate for such an investigation.

Ludwig stated in an interview with “Der Stern” magazine that the issue of the pandemic became a defining characteristic of the Alternative for Germany (AfD)’s campaign and that a federal inquiry is now necessary. She emphasized that this committee should be established by parties who previously underestimated the significance and sensitivity of the subject.

Ludwig acknowledged that the inquiry could potentially create difficulties for her own parliamentary group leader, Jens Spahn, but stressed that the focus should remain on accountability rather than partisan maneuvering. She referenced the controversy surrounding the terminology “pandemic of the unvaccinated” and highlighted the need to rebuild public trust, particularly among those who chose to vote for alternative political parties due to their experiences during the pandemic. Ludwig argued that individuals responsible for past errors should be held accountable, particularly within the national political sphere.
