Parliamentary Showdown Looms Over Key Judicial Appointments

The leader of the Left party, Ines Schwerdtner, has rejected a proposal from the Green parliamentary group for a special session of the Bundestag to elect three Constitutional Court judges this week.

Speaking to the Funke-Mediengruppe newspapers, Schwerdtner emphasized the significant financial burden a special parliamentary session would place on taxpayers. She questioned the rationale behind convening parliamentarians from across Germany during the summer recess without a clear prospect of achieving a consensus.

“To spend more taxpayer money on an event that will not bring us closer to an agreement, I consider neither sensible nor responsible” Schwerdtner stated.

Instead, she urged the conservative CDU/CSU alliance to leverage the summer recess to actively seek common ground. Schwerdtner directly appealed to CDU leader Friedrich Merz, suggesting a more collaborative approach.

“I strongly advise Friedrich Merz to demonstrate more humility. This concerns our highest court – not a matter of party tactics” she said.

Schwerdtner further questioned the Union’s capacity to govern effectively if they fail to secure the necessary consensus for the judicial appointments. “Those who fail to achieve a majority in Constitutional Court elections, I consider also to be incapable of governing on bigger tasks” she warned.
