Calls are growing for Germany’s domestic intelligence agency, the Verfassungsschutz, to monitor the recently formed political alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW). Several politicians have voiced concerns regarding the group’s activities and potential implications for the country’s democratic foundations.
Moritz Körner, a Member of the European Parliament for the Free Democratic Party (FDP), told “Der Spiegel” that the BSW’s actions appear to be directed against Germany’s fundamental democratic order. He cautioned that those who display disrespect for the rule of law and flirt with radical and authoritarian forces risk positioning themselves on the margins of the democratic system. Körner argued that the Verfassungsschutz should investigate BSW to determine whether it poses a serious threat to democratic stability.
Green Party MEP Hannah Neumann echoed this sentiment, urging all observers to carefully monitor the statements and actions of the BSW. Gordon Hoffmann, General Secretary of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Brandenburg, issued a stark warning, characterizing the alliance as a security risk and a potential gateway for extremist ideologies.
These concerns stem from several recent incidents, including a controversial post on the BSW’s official X account (formerly Twitter) expressing solidarity with a pro-Russian propagandist currently on an EU sanctions list. The alliance subsequently distanced itself from the post and removed it. Furthermore, the BSW has publicly supported a local association in Brandenburg, against whose leadership and another member arrest warrants exist due to suspected terrorist financing related to the conflict in Eastern Ukraine.
