A significant crisis is looming for addiction counseling services in Germany, according to Peter Raiser, Managing Director of the German Central Office for Drug Issues (Deutsche Hauptstelle für Suchtfragen). Raiser has warned of a potential financial collapse within the sector, highlighting a precarious situation for many counseling centers.
Speaking ahead of the annual Drug Overdose Remembrance Day on July 21st, Raiser stated that approximately three-quarters of addiction counseling facilities are facing severe financial pressures, making it increasingly challenging to provide crucial support, therapies and guidance.
The majority of these vital services are funded by local districts, cities and municipalities. However, Raiser emphasized that addiction support isn’t a mandated municipal responsibility. This leaves these services vulnerable to budget cuts, despite the growing need for assistance.
The potential consequences, according to Raiser, extend beyond those directly affected by addiction. He cautioned that the future of these counseling centers is uncertain, posing a serious risk to wider societal well-being. Raiser underscored the economic value of addiction services, asserting that every Euro invested generates a return of 17 times the initial amount when factoring in the avoided costs associated with the justice system, healthcare and the pension system.
