Preliminary data released Monday by the Statistical Federal Office (Destatis) reveals a significant downturn in Germany’s hospitality sector throughout May 2025. Adjusted for calendar and seasonal variations, the sector experienced a real turnover decrease of 4.6 percent and a nominal decrease of 2.2 percent compared to April. Year-on-year, the picture is also concerning, with real turnover down 4.0 percent and a marginal nominal increase of 0.8 percent compared to May 2024.
Hotels and other accommodation services bore a particularly heavy impact, experiencing a real turnover decline of 7.0 percent and a nominal decrease of 1.4 percent when compared to April. Year-on-year, within this sub-sector, real turnover was down 4.0 percent but showed a nominal increase of 2.2 percent.
The gastronomy segment also registered a decline, with real turnover decreasing by 3.9 percent and nominal turnover by 3.5 percent relative to April. When measured against May 2024, this area saw a more substantial real turnover decrease of 4.9 percent and a nominal decrease of 0.9 percent. The released figures provide a snapshot of the sector’s performance and are subject to potential revisions as more detailed data becomes available.
